So this article is about a year old, but I'm sure the occasional new Mage comes across it via Google, so here is my comment. I'm sure a lot of critics would disagree with me, but the build I am using almost makes me feel like a tank caster in PVP. I went Pyro/Chloro/Ele, leaving Elemantalist with 0 points, and then doing 4/1 Pyro Chloro. As a Pyro, you can dish out a LOT of damage, while having just enough points in Chloro to make it extremely difficult for anyone to kill you or your teammates nearby before you have them frying on the ground. Try this spec, I guarantee you it is loads of fun, and very effective for PVP/Leveling. Ranged(any type) and Warriors do not stand a chance, just watch out for pesky Rogues.

I'm SC/ELE/DOM mainspec and its awesome. However, I do also have a Pyro/Ele/Archon spec and it rocks the damage. I squish like a bug. If anyone does this, Ice Shield can be a good talent to take - it certainly helps with those oh shit moments. When raiding since you dont go far on enough into ele, its worth dropping it out for necro - as long as you have a bard to make up the loss of exposure.

For soloing its hard to beat a 33/33 Nec Lock. These trees both compliment each other very nicely and never having to worry about mana, and health is nice. FD is always a life saver as well.

For 5 man's I have found the best dps is Pyro / Lock / Arch. If you have ACT dps meters then you can see this for yourself. Best combo I have seen.

For Raiding, I don't believe SC is even close. Yes they can kill trash very quickly but who cares about that. Trash mobs rarely wipe a raid. The boss fights are what your after and its hard to beat the Nec / Lock combo for massive SUSTAINED dps. Timed correctly, the dot mixed with shadow revenant pet and soul purge is a deadly combo that will literally never end. Other options would be Pyro / Lock / Arch which is comparatively close.

Now for PVP.. the main reason I had to post something is because your take on PVP builds is very far off. Unless your dueling someone lol, you should learn to master the Dominator build. They pwn PVP hard and its amusing that few people play them. You have AoE control and debuffs on large crowds. You can CC multiple healers. Instant transmortify is extremely useful for getting the toughest rogues off you and there is no cool down. I highly suggest playing around with this build. I have found Dom / Arch to be best combo for all of the area effect spells.

Interesting read but not great on the info.
I'm personally using a Necro/warlock/archon build which is very nice for soloing. The archon instead of chloro for their 0 point Pillaging Stone which I found better to use than a 1 in 10 chance heal.
As you say, necro is good for a solo build, but you would not use a skeletal horror to tank if this was your main soul. They in fact shake off threat and only act as support dps. A knight or stalwart are the tank pets you'd use.

I've tried all mage specs up to lvl 30. My advice is pve solo ele/chlo/warlock or necro/warlock/chlo pvp stormcall/elemental/chlo(or warlock) or warlock/necro/chlo. In all of these specs you have surviability and decent dmg or pve and your pvp builds will include some of the finest snares/knockback/selfheals/aoe and all around devestation. - Source leveling from 10-30 constently changing specs.

Wow, you are so far off the mark with Stormcaller it isn't even remotely entertaining. You need to seriously reexamine your ideas about Stormcaller and Necromancer. Stormcaller dps is by far some of the highest in the game at this point, second only to Pyromancer, so you need to do alot more research before posting this article. Also it's MANA. not manY.

I play a lvl 50 stormcaller and Im usually leading dps or damn close. Not sure how SC is weak? Perhaps you need to try again cuz peaking over 2k dmg (on trash pulls granted) isn't weak in my eyes. I can keep up with the melee dps on boss fights and my aoe dps gets us to the bosses faster.
